Municipal commissioner stresses on faster legacy waste disposal

The Dehradun municipal commissioner Alok Kumar Pandey has stressed on the need to strengthen the city’s waste management system and accelerate the disposal of legacy waste. Pandey said that Dehradun generates about 572 tonnes of waste every day, with the quantity occasionally increasing to as much as 645 tonnes per day. He stated that managing such a large quantity of waste remains a key responsibility of the Municipal Corporation of Dehradun and requires continuous monitoring and improvement.
The commissioner said that the processing of daily waste is functioning satisfactorily, though certain shortcomings still exist. He has directed the officials concerned to address the gaps and ensure efficient processing of waste generated across the city. Pandey also expressed concern over the slow pace of legacy waste disposal and stressed the need to accelerate the process. He said that accumulated legacy waste continues to pose environmental and public health challenges, making its timely disposal a priority for the corporation.
He said that discussions have also been held with Dehradun Smart City Limited officials regarding the issue and various options are being explored to find a long-term solution. The commissioner directed the officials to prepare an effective action plan and work towards expediting the clearance of legacy waste. Pandey further stated that strengthening waste management and improving disposal mechanisms are essential for maintaining cleanliness and environmental sustainability in the city. He stressed on coordinated effort to ensure that necessary measures are implemented at the earliest.
The commissioner also emphasised the need to improve operational efficiency and find practical solutions to address the growing waste burden in Dehradun. He said that coordinated efforts by all departments will be crucial for ensuring effective waste management and achieving long-term cleanliness goals.
