PIONEER EDGE NEWS SERVICE/Dehradun
With the Char Dham Yatra just over a fortnight away, Hemwati Nandan Bahuguna Uttarakhand Medical University vice chancellor Dr Bhannu Duggal has urged pilgrims to take necessary precautions to ensure a safe and healthy journey. Speaking about the upcoming Yatra, Duggal emphasised the importance of being prepared for the high-altitude trek. She said that pilgrims are advised to ascend gradually, acclimatise at 8,000-9,000 feet for at least two- three nights, limit activity and take adequate rest during the first 48 hours. It’s also crucial to drink enough water, get a medical check-up with them if they have any health conditions and carry prescribed medicines. Identifying the nearest hospital and recognising early symptoms of altitude sickness are also key, she said.
Duggal also highlighted what not to do: don’t ascend to 9,000 feet or higher in a single day, do not ignore symptoms of altitude sickness and avoid consuming alcohol. Drivers are also being advised to take precautions, including ensuring they’re well-rested, the vehicle is in good condition and they’re trained to drive in hilly terrain. She also said that drivers are also advised to avoid alcohol 48 hours prior to travel and not overload vehicles beyond capacity, among others, she said.
