Police seek cancellation of university fest citing law & order concerns

PIONEER EDGE NEWS SERVICE /Dehradun

Premnagar police have issued a notice asking a private university in Dehradun on Tuesday to cancel its proposed cultural fest scheduled for May 1 and 2. Police said that the event was expected to attract around 10,000 to 15,000 people, and permission was not considered suitable due to law and order concerns.

According to the police, last month a serious clash took place between student groups at the same university, in which student Divyanshu Jatrana was allegedly murdered. Officials said the investigation in that case is still going on and the atmosphere on the campus may not be fully conducive at present for such an event.

After reviewing the situation, police issued a notice to the university management and asked them to cancel the programme in the interest of public safety and peace. Officials said large gatherings at educational campuses need careful planning when sensitive matters are still under investigation. Police added that maintaining law and order remains the top priority.

Recently, controversy had also arisen during a DAV College fest in Dehradun after singer Masoom Sharma allegedly used abusive language on stage, leading to criticism on social media. Following that incident, authorities are also being seen as more cautious about public events involving large youth gatherings.
