An investigation process is underway into the case of a woman who died after a surgical bandage was left in her abdomen, according to Dehradun’s chief medical officer, Dr Manoj Kumar Sharma. The case involves 26-year-old Jyoti Prajwal, a resident of Lakhibagh, who underwent a cesarean section at the Mother Care Centre (Singh Eye Hospital) in Araghar, Dalanwala.
Prajwal gave birth to her son on January 29 and was discharged from the hospital four days later. Approximately ten days after her delivery, she started to experience severe abdominal pain. Despite undergoing multiple tests, doctors were unable to identify the source of her discomfort. When her condition deteriorated, her family brought her back to the same hospital, but she was later referred to Graphic Era Hospital. Tragically, it was revealed that a bandage from her surgery had been left in her abdomen, leading to a severe infection that ultimately caused her death late on Sunday. In light of this tragedy, Prajwal’s family staged a protest by placing her body outside the hospital, alleging that the hospital administration was responsible for negligence and possibly even murder. In response, the CMO acknowledged the situation and established a committee to investigate.
Providing an update, Sharma stated that the investigation has recently begun and is currently ongoing. He said that there has been a delay in the report’s completion due to some holidays, but it is anticipated that the findings will be available by the end of this week. He said that the committee includes specialists such as gynaecologists and surgeons and should the investigation reveal the need for additional expertise, other specialists will be added to the team.
He also said that once the investigation is completed, he will personally review the report with the officials. If any decisions are deemed problematic, the Health department will seek assistance from the national medical commission.
It will be recalled that Sharma previously stated that in such cases, if a doctor is found guilty, their medical license will be revoked.
