PIONEER EDGE NEWS SERVICE | Dehradun

Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) president Karan Mahara has expressed deep grief over the massive destruction and loss of life and property caused by the flash flood at Dharali in Uttarkashi district.  Expressing condolences to the families of those killed in the disaster, Mahara demanded that the State government should relocate the people of the affected area to safer places to protect their lives and property.

Mahara said that the disaster in Dharali has resulted in heavy loss to life and property. He said that the situation is precarious in many parts of the State due to consistent heavy rains. Many villages have lost contact with the district headquarters, Mahara added.

He said that despite the prior warning of the Meteorological department, no security arrangements were made by the Disaster Management department of the State in the areas prone to natural disasters. Even after the severe disaster caused by heavy rains and cloudbursts in many districts of the mountainous region in the past, security arrangements could not be made in other disaster affected areas of the state, due to which an atmosphere of panic has prevailed in the minds of the people of these areas.

The PCC president said that the State administration had identified 377 villages in the disaster prone area a few years ago but till now no arrangement has been made for their rehabilitation.

He appealed to all the Congressmen of the State to unite in this hour of crisis and help the victims and affected families.
