Follow precautions for protection from bird flu, say experts

PIONEEREDGE NEWS SERVICE | Dehradun

Doctors have advised individuals to follow necessary precautions to protect themselves from the effects of bird flu. They have stated that consuming bird flu-infected eggs and chickens may lead to humans being infected and in severe cases, can result in pneumonia. To avoid this, individuals are encouraged to consume properly cooked chicken and ensure they buy eggs from trustworthy sources.

Principal Medical Superintendent (PMS) at Deen Dayal Upadhyay District Hospital Dr Manu Jain said that no positive cases of bird flu have been reported at the hospital so far. However, he emphasised that this does not mean individuals should neglect precautions. Bird flu can be transmitted easily to humans through sneezing and the consumption of infected eggs and chickens. Those infected with bird flu may experience symptoms such as cough, cold and fever and in severe cases, it can lead to pneumonia.

He said that individuals with pet birds or those who work in the poultry industry should maintain a distance from the birds to prevent infection. He advised consuming chicken that has been thoroughly cooked and washing it before cooking. Additionally, individuals should wear masks if they are experiencing cough or cold symptoms to prevent spreading the illness through respiratory droplets.

Senior physician at Combined Medical Institute (CMI) Hospital, Dr Anshika Jain also urged individuals to take necessary precautions to protect themselves from bird flu. She reiterated that bird flu can affect humans through the consumption of infected eggs and chicken, potentially causing symptoms similar to regular flu and, in serious cases, pneumonia. Therefore, it is important to purchase eggs from poultry farms that are not infected with bird flu and to ensure that chicken is properly cooked. She also advised individuals with pre-existing conditions such as diabetes or hypertension to take necessary precautions, as they may be more vulnerable to infection.
