PIONEER EDGE NEWS SERVICE/Dehradun
In a late-night crackdown to enhance road safety, the Regional Transport Office (RTO) of the Dehradun division issued 42 challans and impounded 10 vehicles during an intensive enforcement two-day drive conducted on Friday and Saturday. This campaign was launched under the direction of the regional transport officer (Enforcement and Road Safety) Anita Chamola.
According to officials, the campaign involved the assistant regional transport Officer (ARTO), Enforcement, Dehradun, ARTO Vikasnagar and the Dehradun Interceptor squad, who jointly checked vehicles on various major roads and intersections, including ISBT, Ballupur Chowk, Transport Nagar and Asharodi.
The primary goals of the campaign were to bolster road safety, prevent accidents and ensure effective action against drivers violating traffic rules. Particular attention was given to vehicles operating without fitness certificates, drunk drivers, overloaded vehicles and those used for commercial purposes through online services like BlaBla Car and Rapido, as well as other serious traffic violations.
During the joint inspection campaign, a total of 42 vehicles were challaned and 10 vehicles were seized for various violations. The seized vehicles mainly included those operating without fitness certificates, driven by those under the influence of alcohol and overloaded vehicles, they added. Officials emphasised that drunk driving poses a significant threat not only to the driver but also to other road users. Similarly, unfit and overloaded vehicles are major contributors to road accidents. The Transport department is adopting a zero-tolerance policy and taking strict action in such cases.
Chamola said that road safety is not just about enforcement but also a collective responsibility of every citizen. Drivers should adhere to traffic rules, drive within the designated speed limits, keep all vehicle documents up to date and never operate a vehicle under the influence of alcohol or other drugs.
The Transport department has urged the public to ensure their own safety and the safety of others by following road safety rules. Future special enforcement campaigns will continue to be conducted to promote road safety and traffic discipline.
