The Uttarakhand State Commission for Women chairperson, Kusum Kandwal laid stress on digital monitoring of children, stating that it is a top responsibility for parents in today’s changing world. Notably, International Day for Protection of Children was observed on Monday.
Kandwal highlighted that the uncontrolled use of social media and mobile phones is rapidly misleading children and the younger generation, making them vulnerable to exploitation by antisocial and criminal elements. She cited many recent cases of children who have gone missing, or taken a wrong path. “From investigations of these cases, it has become clear that the children were often very active on social media and in contact with strangers or individuals prone to depravity. Due to their immaturity and young age, they can easily be misled and make poor choices. These incidents are extremely worrisome,” she said.
Kandwal reminded the parents about their serious responsibility to continuously and thoroughly monitor their children. She emphasised that merely providing children with mobile phones is not enough. “It is crucial to oversee their daily usage, the type of content they view online and the individuals they interact with on social media,” she warned.
Kandwal urged everyone to work together to create a safe and supportive environment for children while also protecting them from these invisible dangers by managing their screen time effectively.
