Rumours causing unnecessary anxiety among Doonites

PIONEER EDGE NEWS SERVICE/Dehradun

Residents of Dehradun have expressed concern about the heightened anxiety caused by rumours spreading on social media and among the public regarding a shortage of LPG cylinders. They said that the recent actual shortage has already been a cause for concern and the circulating rumours about booking and further shortages have exacerbated this anxiety. Residents urged authorities to act against those spreading such rumours, not only in the case of LPG but also regarding other issues that could adversely affect the community.

It is important to note that initial issues in the supply of LPG cylinders had resulted in panic buying. At the same time, rumours circulating on social media or spreading from person to person have increased anxiety among the population. Local resident Vansh Chauhan observed that since the start of the LPG cylinder issue, social media has been flooded with videos and memes. Additionally, he said that rumours, such as claims that the booking period for LPG has been extended or others have spread quickly. He said that residents, like himself, often believe these rumours, leading to increased concern and mental distress. Chauhan pointed out that this isn’t the first instance; similar rumours emerged during the Covid-19 pandemic. He urged authorities to take action against those spreading such rumours on various platforms, setting an example to deter future incidents.

“Just a few days ago, my friend visited me and mentioned a rumour about LPG cylinder supply issues, which made me anxious. My friend learned about the rumour through social media and shared it with me as well. Later, we found it was false information when we checked,” said another resident Meena Tandon. She acknowledged that such rumours can lead to anxiety and emphasised that the spreading of misinformation, especially on social media, negatively impacts citizens. She also urged authorities to take action against those who spread such rumours. Another local Mahindra Pandey echoed similar concerns and called on authorities to implement a special policy for social media, stating that anyone spreading false information should face consequences.
