‘Sindoor’ Mango: Innovative breakthrough by Pantnagar University

PIONEER NEWS SERVICE/ Pantnagar

In a remarkable fusion of patriotism and agricultural innovation, scientists at Govind Ballabh Pant University of Agriculture and Technology (GBPUAT), Pantnagar, have developed a new and unique variety of mango named ‘Sindoor’, inspired by the recent success of ‘Operation Sindoor’.

Unlike traditional mango varieties that mature in the summer, ‘Sindoor’ ripens in autumn (September–October), making it a rare and commercially promising crop. With its richly sweet flavour, vibrant sindoor-hued skin and aromatic essence, the fruit promises to offer a refreshing taste experience beyond the regular mango season, the university’s scientists said.

A senior horticulture scientist at the university, A K Singh who led the innovative breakthrough said that this fruit matures when mangoes are scarcely available in the market, thus enhancing its market value and offering farmers an excellent opportunity for additional income.

The vice- chancellor, GBPUAT, Manmohan Singh Chauhan lauded the innovation.
