Uttarakhand police organised a statewide virtual cyber awareness programme on Thursday in which it claimed that itn interacted with about 1.75 lakh students from more than 1,100 government schools. The director general of police Deepam Seth addressed students and shared tips on online fraud, social media safety, artificial intelligence (AI), hacking and cyberbullying.
He urged students to become “Cyber Smart Citizens” and spread awareness about cyber safety among their families and friends. Seth said technology and AI provide many opportunities for students to learn new skills and develop their careers. However, students must also understand the risks of the digital world.
The programme was conducted from the ICT Virtual Classroom Studio at Government Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya, Dehradun. Students from Classes VI to XII joined the programme virtually from different parts of Uttarakhand.
During the session, the DGP answered the students’ questions on cybercrimes in simple language. He advised students not to forward any photo, video or information without checking it first. He also asked them not to click on suspicious links.
Inspector general of police (Cyber) Nilesh Anand Bharne, Special Task Force senior superintendent of police Ajai Singh and assistant superintendent of police cyber Shantanu Parasur also interacted with the students. They explained topics such as AI, deepfakes, digital arrest, online harassment, sextortion, fake profiles and online gaming through presentations and videos.
The police advised students to contact the 1930 cyber helpline or file a complaint on cybercrime.gov.in in case of financial cyber fraud. The DGP said that regular awareness programmes on cyber security, drug awareness and road safety will now be organised in government schools based on student’s demand.
