The Uttarakhand State Legal Services Authority (UKSLSA) expressed serious concern over the worsening condition of Sukhatal Lake, a historically and environmentally important lake in the lake city of Nainital. After conducting a field inspection of the lake and its surrounding area, the authority has written to the Municipal Corporation and other departments, directing them to take immediate corrective measures. The members say that if effective action is not taken in time, it will take initiative in collaboration with the District Legal Services Authority to conserve the lake.
Speaking of the matter, the member secretary of the Uttarakhand State Legal Services Authority, Pradeep Mani Tripathi said that Sukhatal Lake is extremely important from a global heritage perspective, but its condition is currently deteriorating. “During the inspection, large quantities of plastic bottles, food wrappers and other garbage were found scattered in and around the lake. Furthermore, the walking track around the lake was found damaged and in poor condition in many places,” he added.
The inspection also revealed that despite the availability of parking facilities, many vehicles are being parked illegally around the lake area and walking tracks. This not only causes inconvenience to tourists and locals, but also adversely impacts the lake’s environment. Furthermore, most of the streetlights in the lake area have been non-functioning for a long time, plunging the entire area into darkness as soon as evening falls.
The authority has also received complaints of antisocial activities on public benches and surrounding areas. It also noted a lack of regular cleaning and solid waste management throughout the area. Taking these circumstances into serious consideration, UKSLSA has directed the municipality and related departments to ensure comprehensive cleaning of the lake area, a sustainable waste disposal system, scientific lake rejuvenation, removal of illegal parking, repair of faulty lighting, improved public toilet facilities and regular police patrolling.
Tripathi stated that during the inspection, some irregularities were discovered on the Naina Peak trek route. Furthermore, the authority will take cognizance of potential illegal constructions around Naini Lake and will seek reports from the relevant departments. “The authority’s objective is to ensure the conservation of Nainital’s natural heritage and maintain environmental balance, so that future generations can enjoy these heritage sites in a safe and clean state,” he added.
