Two Kashmiri brothers, one of them a minor, were allegedly beaten by a shop-owner and others in Dehradun’s Vikasnagar area on Wednesday evening. One of the injured- 18-year-old Danish- said that the trouble had started after the shopkeeper came to know about their background. He alleged that the shopkeeper had first hurled abuses on him and his minor brother and then attacked them with a rod. Police registered the case against Sanjay Yadav and an unidentified person.  Yadav was later arrested.

The thrashed youths from Kashmir claimed that a woman was also among those who had taken active part in the verbal and physical assault.  As per their allegation, sticks and rods were used in the assault, leaving them injured.  The minor suffered an injury to the head and a fractured arm while Danish reportedly received injuries on several parts of his body.

A relative of the injured youths said that they had gone to a shop in Chowki Bazaar to buy small items. “As they told their names on being asked by the shopkeeper, the latter and others began abusing them. They faced discrimination after which the trashing began. This was their first visit to Dehradun and they are here only to sell shawls,” said the relative. According to the police, preliminary investigation revealed that only one accused person was involved in the assault.
