In light of the staff shortage, the Uttarakhand Jal Sansthan and Peyjal Nigam have jointly submitted a proposal to the State administration to authorise women’s self-help groups to distribute water bills to villages across the State. This information was shared by UJS secretary (Appraisal) Maneesh Semwal.
Semwal informed that there are approximately 14,000 villages established across the State, while only 3,000 employees are currently working in the department. It has been acknowledged for some time that due to this staff shortage, it has become impossible for employees to effectively distribute water bills in the villages. Many village residents have also complained about the absence or delays in receiving their water bills and other related issues, he added.
Semwal said that in response to these challenges, the Peyjal Nigam in collaboration with UJS, has submitted a proposal to the State administration. The proposal requests approval for registered women’s self-help groups to deliver water bills in the villages. Semwal stated that this initiative will help overcome many challenges associated with bill distribution, particularly in rural areas. Additionally, the women’s self-help groups will also monitor illegal connections and oversee water quality, while informing the department about any complaints related to drinking water or leakage. To support these efforts, the groups will receive incentives, he said.
Semwal further added that the proposal also includes an estimated cost of Rs 1,125 lakh. It is expected that the proposal will be approved soon, with hopes of making an announcement by November 9, coinciding with the State foundation day.
Notably, this proposal is part of the Jal Jeevan Mission scheme, which is considered a game-changer initiative.
