Monkey-catching drive to begin in Doon from March 11

The Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) announced a special drive to capture monkeys in different parts of the provisional State capital following a rise in complaints from residents about the monkey menace.

Senior municipal veterinary officer Dr Varun Aggarwal said that initially the operation will be carried out on March 11 and 12 by a selected monkey-catching team hired by the corporation. The work will be conducted by a firm led by Sandeep of Monkey Capture and Monkey Transportation, Haridwar.

Aggarwal said that the sanitation inspectors and supervisors across the city have been directed to coordinate with the team in their respective areas and provide necessary assistance during the drive. The team will also submit daily written reports along with GPS photographs of the monkeys captured to ensure proper monitoring of the operation, Aggarwal added. 

In the first phase, the drive will cover areas including the railway station area, Brahampuri, Niranjanpur, Khudbura, Rajpur, Raipur ward, RK Puram Jogiwala, Badripur and Ajabpur Khurd.

Aggarwal stated that the captured monkeys will be transported to the sterilisation centre at Chidiyapur in Haridwar. After sterilisation, they will be released in forest areas in coordination with the forest department.

The drive has been planned in response to increasing complaints of monkey attacks and disturbances reported from several localities of the city.
