8,643 challans issued for drunk driving cases in 2025

Uttarakhand Police issued 8,643 challans for drunk driving cases from January to September 2025. As per the data issued by the Traffic directorate, 2,405 driving licenses were forwarded to the Transport department for suspension during this period.

The highest number of actions were reported from Dehradun district with 4,286 challans and 1,144 licenses recommended for suspension, followed by Pauri district with 1,682 challans and 752 license suspensions and Haridwar district with 1,097 challans and 77 license suspensions.

Other districts include Nainital with 448 challans and 157 license suspensions, Pithoragarh with 291 challans and 80 license suspensions, Udham Singh Nagar with 279 challans and 19 license suspensions, Tehri with 212 challans and 95 license suspensions, Chamoli with 72 challans and 19 license suspensions, Uttarkashi with 66 challans and 14 license suspensions, Champawat with 65 challans and 11 license suspensions, Almora with 52 challans and eight license suspensions, Bageshwar with 47 challans and 19 license suspensions and Rudraprayag with 46 challans and 10 license suspensions.

The inspector general and director of Traffic, Anant Shankar Takawale informed that the directorate has been running a continuous enforcement campaign across all districts to strengthen road safety and control the practice of drunk driving. The campaign aims to reduce road accidents caused by intoxicated driving and increase public awareness about traffic discipline. Takawale reviewed the actions taken against drunk drivers and instructed district officers to continue effective enforcement and awareness campaigns.

He stated that driving under the influence endangers not only the driver but also other road users. The police aim to curb such behaviour through both enforcement and awareness measures. He also urged citizens to strictly avoid driving under the influence of alcohol during the Deepawali season and warned that strict legal action will continue against offenders to ensure public safety.
