The accused was also allegedly in contact with another army man of Subedar rank in Kumaon regiment, as per the police. The duo had allegedly scammed about 200 youth so far.

The senior superintendent of police (SSP) of Udham Singh Nagar, Manjunath TC informed in a Press conference on Friday that a complainant named Tapas registered a complaint against two men who had asked him to pay Rs 50,000 and give them his original education-related documents with the promise of ensuring his recruitment in the ongoing Agniveer recruitment in Kumaon regiment. When the complainant was not selected, he asked for his money back but both accused allegedly threatened him. The SSP informed that various teams of police were formed to investigate the matter and on the basis of the evidence collected through surveillance, manual and technical and investigation, the police nabbed both the accused.

The SSP said that one of the accused named Vicky Mandal has claimed of being a soldier in Jat regiment and was allegedly in contact with an army man of Subedar rank in Kumaon regiment regarding the scam. He said, “We are working to verify the claims made by the accused. We cannot discuss more details about the army personnel he was allegedly in contact with in the Kumaon regiment as it is a part of an ongoing investigation. We are conducting an investigation and checking his call records. Necessary action will be taken as per the evidence found during the investigation.”

The SSP said that both accused have allegedly scammed and threatened about 200 people and more people are believed to be involved in it.  He said that Mandal used to show his army identity card to Agniveer aspirants while using the name of the Subedar in the Kumaon Regiment he has claimed to be in contact with to give false assurance of their selection. “If the aspirants get selected on their own, they ask for more money. If the aspirants fail to make it, they refuse to return their original documents and threaten them for more money. I have also received information from other parts of the district that these two have scammed other people in the same manner. Our police teams are investigating the matter and everyone involved in it will be arrested,” stated the SSP. He informed that the police have recovered a pistol, some cartridges, a few debit cards, a car worth Rs 15 lakh, Rs 43,000 cash and some education related documents of others.
