The State administration has approved operation of crane services in public private partnership mode to tow vehicles parked in no-parking zones on nine routes and areas of Dehradun district from next month to tackle increasing traffic issues across the city. This will be started as a pilot project in Dehradun and if it succeeds, the services will be started in other cities too. Considering the illegal parking practice in Dehradun, the police had sent a proposal to the State government regarding providing crane services to lift the vehicles parked in no-parking zones on nine routes and areas of the city.

The nine routes and areas marked for the crane service are IT Park- Canal Road, Sahastradhara- Raipur, Ballupur- Balliwala- Premnagar Road, Kargi- Ajabpur flyover, ISBT- Saharanpur Road- Railway Station Road, Clock Tower- Rajpur Road, Clock Tower- Chakrata Road, Mussoorie city area and Rishikesh city area. The government has approved this proposal and the crane service will be commenced in public-private partnership (PPP) mode as a pilot project in the city. The officials informed that tenders the department concerned will soon invite tender at the district level besides preparing a service contract agreement to ensure proper execution of the plan. The officials said that all cranes operating under PPP mode will be GPS enabled and will be linked to emergency number 112. Besides this, a dashboard camera will also be installed in the crane to record the towing operation to ensure transparency in the operation.  These cranes will also be used to tow vehicles parked on roads leading to traffic obstruction across the city on the basis of the complaints received through the control room and 112 apart from regular patrolling of the cranes. The officials said that the crane service will be commenced in the new year and they are optimistic it will be as successful as it has been in cities like Prayagraj and Lucknow. According to the officials, if the pilot project succeeds within three months resulting in an improved traffic system in Dehradun, the government would approve the start of the service in other cities of the State too. The authorities said that the police will install a sufficient number of sign boards of no parking in the said nine routes to ensure people comply with the rules.

They have appealed to the people to cooperate with the police by not parking the vehicles in no-parking zones or the vehicle will be towed by the police and a hefty towing charge will have to be paid by the vehicle owner.
