Nutritional value of millets are usually undermined by many at the local level but increasing their consumption in daily life helps in leading a healthy life, especially the younger generation that are inclined towards consumption of junk food. This was stated by Dehradun district magistrate Sonika on the occasion of Farmers’ seminar and Millet Bhoj on Thursday organised at Doon Library and Research Centre in Parade Ground under Dehradun district plan by the district agriculture department to promote millets and delicacies that can be prepared using them.

Addressing farmers, researchers and scientists present in the conference, the DM said that the year 2023 is being celebrated as the International Millet Year by the United Nations and the district administration has decided to promote locally grown millet and its products across the state on the same lines. She said that varieties of millet are available to people here but its nutritional value is undermined by many as people tend to prefer fancy food products which are not even grown here and might not be that nutritious. She said that this conference was organised to let everybody know the varieties of tasty dishes can be prepared using millets too. She said that everyone should involve consumption of millets in their eating habits to lead a healthy life which would also promote the local economy by financially strengthening farmers.

The DM also inaugurated Shri Anna Thali prepared by women self help group Saraswati Jagriti using locally grown millets. She also visited the stall of delicacies prepared from millets like ladoos and barfis of Mandwa, Namkeen of Jhangora, Mandwa halwa, Mandwa momos and Mandwa burgers among others. She tasted the dishes and praised them. She appealed to all to include millets in their everyday meals.
