Doon police issues 200 e-challans on public transport vehicle operators

In view of frequent violations by auto rickshaws, Vikrams and city buses in Dehradun, the traffic police have issued e-challan to 200 public transport vehicle operators via CCTV cameras installed across the city. The superintendent of police (traffic), Akshay Konde said that public transport vehicles like auto rickshaws, Vikrams and city buses were instructed to halt their respective vehicles at least 50 metres away from chowks and junctions to pick up or drop passengers to streamline the traffic system.

The police have been consistently appealing to them to follow traffic rules via the public address system but despite that, many continue to flout the rules. Considering this, the traffic police used CCTV cameras to issue 200 e-challans in the past three days, said Konde. He said that police will continue to take action against such violators using CCTV cameras. The SP had ordered last month that Vikrams hold contract carriage permits as per which they are not allowed to pick up passengers midway. They are only allowed to go from one fixed stop to another on booking like auto rickshaws.

He said that many Vikrams operators have even installed electric bells which they ask the passengers to use to alight from Vikrams at their respective stops which are a violation under Motor Vehicles Act. After giving enough warnings, the traffic police will now run an intense checking campaign in a phased manner. Police will take action against violations and send the regular report to the transport department, said the SP.
