The Bharatiya Janata Party has stated that the Congress which had supported the Women’s Reservation bill is now trying to spread confusion on the issue. Telling women to beware of the Congress, the BJP national vice president and Uttarakhand co in-charge Rekha Verma said that these very people vote in favour of the bill in parliament to avoid displeasing women and then try to spread confusion on this historic decision outside the parliament. Verma said this while talking to journalists at the BJP State office hereon the first day of her three-day State tour on Monday
She opined that statements made by the Congress on women’s reservation prove that the party is against the empowerment of women. “The Congress reluctantly supported the bill in parliament as it dared not to face the disappointment of women. Those who are now raising doubts and trying to create confusion on this historic development did nothing when they were in office for 27 years. Even while in opposition, the BJP has supported this bill in the Rajya Sabha during 2010 and motivated the Congress-led alliance government. However, the Congress didn’t dare to get the bill passed in Lok Sabha for fear of its allies SP and RJD. Now these very people are demanding immediate reservation and raising objections. They had the full opportunity for three decades to draft the law as they wished but they never tried. Now when Prime Minister Narendra Modi has enabled a decision to empower the women they are unable to digest it,” said Verma.
She further said that it is shameful that a historic decision taken unanimously by the parliament is being referred to as a “Jumla” by the Congress. “If the Congress had so many issues, why did it support the bill in the parliament just to maintain its image in the public? The Congress is now making baseless statements and trying to spread confusion now after the bill has been passed,” she said.
