World Coffee Day is celebrated on October 1 every year to recognise and celebrate the love for the beverage. While the occasion is observed, the consumption of coffee has also witnessed a surge across all age groups. In light of this, experts caution against the detrimental effects that excessive coffee consumption can have on one’s health. It is advised that parents refrain from offering coffee to their children, as it poses potential risks to their wellbeing. Opting for lighter coffee options on an occasional basis may prove to be more beneficial for individuals for their overall health, said the experts.
Dietician Renu Jain said, “The consumption of coffee has become a prevalent aspect of the lifestyle for individuals of all age groups. However, it is important to maintain moderation in all aspects of life, including coffee consumption. Excessive intake of coffee can have negative effects on one’s health. In addition, consuming excessive amounts of coffee can lead to heart problems, high blood pressure and acidity. Therefore, it is advisable for individuals to refrain from consuming excessive quantities of coffee. Further, it is recommended that individuals avoid consuming coffee during the evening hours to ensure a good night’s sleep. One cup of coffee in a day is enough,” she said.
Regarding this, cardiologist Dr Abhinav said that excessive consumption of any substance can have detrimental effects on an individual’s health. Tea and coffee, for example, contain caffeine which can have negative impacts on health. “Consuming excessive amounts of coffee can lead to obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure and sleep disorders. It is advised that parents refrain from giving coffee to their children due to its negative impact on their health. To maintain good health, it is recommended to consume coffee in moderation,” he added.
