The State minister of women empowerment and child development Rekha Arya distributed sanitary napkins among 1,200 girls and provided Mahalaxmi Kits to 30 women in Haldwani on Wednesday. She distributed these at a programme hosted by the Government Girls Inter College in Haldwani to mark the International Day of Girl Child.
After felicitating the girls with sanitary napkins and Mahalaxmi Kits, the minister said that there was a time when the birth of daughters was considered a curse. “But the time has changed and due to increased access to education, the daughters are successfully taking on the daunting challenges and excelling in every realm of life. They must shed gender inferiority and march ahead, shoulder to shoulder with the male children,” she said.
The minister stressed on eliminating all kinds of gender discrimination and urged the parents and the society at large to support this mission, ensuring that the daughters are treated equally with the sons in every family.
Speaking of empowerment through the instrumentality of education, Arya said that the girls have demonstrated the transformative power of education. “This is the most formidable weapon at our disposal and with its aid, we can confront any challenge that comes our way, however intimidating,” she said.
Dwelling on the Women’s Reservation Bill, the minister said that the implementation of this bill would catapult the women into the positions of the framers of the future of the country. “This bill marks a giant step India has taken towards complete elimination of gender bias from the country’s collective consciousness,” she added.
