Jumbo hit by train dies after 19 agonising days

A female elephant injured after being hit by a train on November 14 has succumbed to her injuries. The elephant was hit by the Ranikhet Express going to Delhi in the Tanda range of Terai central forest division.
The pachyderm had sustained serious injuries in the accident. A severely injured limb prevented the jumbo from standing. Since then the Forest department was treating the injured elephant with a team of wildlife veterinarians. Officials said that the speed of the train at the time of the impact was such that after the injured elephant sat once, she was unable to stand up since then. The jumbo succumbed to its injury on Sunday night.
The Terai central divisional forest officer Shashi Deva and other officials reached the site on being informed about the death of the elephant. The post mortem of the carcass was carried out on the spot and the body was buried after that. It is pertinent to mention here that the forest department has lodged a case against the locomotive pilot after the accident.
