The State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (SCPCR) has directed the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) to ensure that no private school in the State promotes books from coaching institutes for the students. This direction was given during a recent meeting organised by the commission.

The chairperson of the SCPCR Geeta Khanna informed that a recent inspection of both private and public schools revealed that a private school in Dehradun was providing coaching institute books to its students. In response, the commission called a meeting with various departments, including the Education department, regional officer and CBSE, she said.

Khanna further said that during the meeting, the commission directed CBSE officials to ensure that no private school promotes coaching institute books. Additionally, CBSE should ensure the formation of mandatory committees such as PTA, POCSO committee, anti-bullying committee, anti-drug committee and ICC committee in all private schools in the State. The commission also emphasised the need for compliance with specifications of the weight of school bags, she added.

The SCPCR head further added that the commission stressed the re-inspection of schools that have received recognition in the last five years, including the physical examination process of the management committee before issuing recognition. She added that they also emphasised the importance of re-inspecting the land utilisation documents of all private schools through a review committee.

It will be recalled that the commission recently conducted an inspection at a school. During the inspection, the commission officials noticed that the first items on the principal’s table were books provided by a coaching institute. When questioned, the principal disclosed that the institute occasionally conducts classes at the school to offer tips to the students.
