In order to enhance the treatment of cancer, the administration of Government Doon Medical College (GDMC) hospital has submitted a proposal to the State administration to implement radiotherapy at the facility. Sharing this information, the medical superintendent at GDMC hospital Dr Anurag Aggarwal informed that there are two primary forms of cancer treatment- chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Presently, chemotherapy is being administered to cancer patients at the hospital by various surgeons including gynaecologists, ENT surgeons and others, he said.

Aggarwal further informed that the hospital administration has prepared a plan to enhance cancer treatment by introducing radiotherapy for patients. Considering this, a proposal for the radiotherapy machine has been submitted to the State administration, depending on the availability of a space large enough to place the machine. The provision of radiotherapy at the hospital is anticipated to be a lengthy process as the State administration needs to assess the land for allocating space to expand the necessary facilities for cancer treatment, he added.

The medical superintendent said that the hospital currently has a 25-bed ward dedicated to cancer patients despite the lack of specialised doctors for cancer treatment. He said that once a separate cancer hospital is established in a larger facility, the cancer department will receive updated facilities and more doctors.

Informing about the cancer registry, Aggarwal said that as of 2023, a total of 216 cancer registries have been conducted for cancer-positive patients. Notably, the hospital has recently initiated a cancer registry programme. In the cancer registry programme, a four-page form is given by the hospital administration to the cancer patient where they have to fill in the details about themselves, which includes their lifestyle, the locality where they live, name, age and various other details.
