A group of the street vendors workers union connected with Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) met Dehradun mayor Saurabh Thapliyal on Saturday and submitted a memorandum seeking protection of the livelihoods of street vendors in the city.
The delegation informed the mayor that vendors in areas such as Cement Road, DL Road and Karanpur have been running their businesses for over 50 years and depend on them to support their families. They said that any action affecting their livelihoods could push many families into financial hardship. CITU district general secretary Lekhraj submitted a list of vendors and stated that most belong to economically weaker sections and reside in nearby settlements. He urged the municipal administration to safeguard their means of livelihood.
Thapliyal assured the delegation that no one’s livelihood would be targeted and that every individual has the right to earn a living. He said that the concerns of the vendors would be considered sympathetically.
