Several local public transport unions staged a protest against the regional transport officer (Administration) of Dehradun division Sunil Sharma and burnt his effigy at Lansdowne Chowk here on Tuesday. The union representatives claimed that every person associated with public transportation has been facing problems due to unsystematic and inefficient working methods. They said that Sharma has been misusing his position in the department which is one of the main causes of the widespread corruption in the regional transport office in Dehradun.
The city bus union president Vijay Vardhan Dandriyal alleged that Sharma continues to work for his personal gains in the department rather than working for the welfare of public and local transport operators. He makes most of his decisions on the basis of how it can benefit him. Several cases are also registered against him regarding similar matters, Dandriyal claimed. He said that all transport unions have demanded that chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami should remove Sharma from his position in the RTO besides taking strict action against him. This will also help in improving the image of the Transport department which has degraded considerably in recent times, he added.
