The Municipal Corporation of Haridwar (MCH) collected about 5,000 metric tonnes of waste since the commencement of Kanwad Yatra on July 22, the Haridwar municipal commissioner Varun Chaudhary said. The corporation collected about 420 metric tonnes of waste daily making it about 4,636 metric tonnes of waste collection by August 1.

The sanitation team ensured that all generated waste got disposed of efficiently as per the rules. He informed that the whole city was divided into seven zones, with sanitation inspectors assigned to each zone to streamline and enhance the cleaning operations. An additional 1,000 sanitation workers were deployed along with extra garbage collection vehicles to maintain cleanliness to handle the increased influx of devotees during the Kanwad Yatra. Moreover, the corporation had also installed pumps strategically across the Kanwad Mela grounds to tackle waterlogging issues caused during the monsoon.

Besides this, Chaudhary set a target for the sanitation teams to thoroughly clean the Mela area within 24 hours till Saturday evening. Following his directives, the team decided to conduct a large-scale, overnight cleaning drive at key locations including Har Ki Paidi, Pantdweep and Chandi Ghat, among others. The sanitation teams were gearing up to conduct the overnight cleaning drive when this report was being filed.

The commissioner informed that all garbage collection vehicles had been deployed for this massive effort. He said that after the thorough cleaning, the sanitation workers will also spray insecticides across all sites to prevent any potential health hazards. Chaudhary said that the corporation’s dedication to maintaining cleanliness during the Kanwad Mela has not only enhanced the experience for the devotees but also set a benchmark for effective waste management during large-scale religious gatherings.
