Man drowns while fleeing from police in Haridwar

A man drowned in a pond while attempting to escape from police following a tip-off about the illegal slaughter of a protected animal in the Gangahar area of Haridwar district on Sunday. The incident sparked anger among local villagers who staged a protest and initially prevented the police from retrieving the body. They also engaged in a verbal altercation with the police. According to the officials, a team from the Cow Protection Squad received information that a man on a motorcycle was transporting prohibited meat near Madhopur village in the Gangnahar Kotwali area at about 8 AM on Sunday. Acting on this tip, the police set up a blockade near Madhopur to intercept the man, who then attempted to flee. In his effort to escape, he jumped into a nearby pond. A large crowd of villagers soon gathered at the scene and began protesting. The situation escalated into a heated exchange between the villagers and the police. The police managed to calm the villagers and retrieved the man’s body from the pond. The officials said that when the police attempted to send the body for a post-mortem examination, the villagers initially refused to allow it but the body was finally taken away. The deceased was identified as Monu, a resident of Sohalpur Gada, Roorkee. The officials said that the investigation is ongoing to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident. Further action will be taken based on the findings of the investigation, they added.
