In latest news from Uttarakhand, the opposition Congress took out a rally in Haldwani in protest against what the party termed the BJP government’s total failure in stopping sexual crimes being increasingly perpetrated against girls and women in the State. Aside from sloganeering, the Congress activists led by the MLA Sumit Hridayesh and the former Assembly Speaker Govind Singh Kunjwal rallied upto the SDM court. An effigy of the State government was also torched on the occasion.
Lashing out at the BJP government, Kunjwal said that the chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami should resign while taking responsibility of girls and women being subjected to gang rape, rape and other forms of sexual crimes. Taking a dig at the Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Hridayesh said that although he had promptly unleashed the CBI in Bengal after the rape-murder case in Kolkata he had been maintaining a stony silence on the Ankita Bhandari murder case in Uttarakhand for years.
