In order to raise awareness among the general public, the Social Development for Communities (SDC) Foundation organised a waste management centric awareness programme at 40 schools in Dehradun on Tuesday under the theme of ‘Swachhata Hi Seva – Swabhav Swachhata and Sanskaar Swachhata’’. Large-scale collection of single-use plastic waste was carried out for recycling purposes during the programme. The primary goal was to raise awareness in society, particularly students, about waste management and to collect plastic waste on a large scale for recycling. Students and community members were educated on the detrimental impacts of plastic waste. Apart from this, meaningful conversations took place with school authorities and students on the importance of using plastic alternatives and embracing effective waste management practices during the programme.
SDC Foundation member Dinesh Semwal informed that they have successfully set up 210 plastic banks in Dehradun within the last 11 months under the Plastic Bank Project. He shared insights from this initiative, mentioning that the foundation currently manages these plastic banks in partnership with 69 Maggi points along the Dehradun-Kimadi-Mussoorie route, 64 educational institutions, 40 accommodations, nine universities and colleges, seven resident welfare associations, seven showrooms and various other establishments, impacting more than 80,000 individuals in Dehradun. Praveen Upreti of SDC Foundation underlined the importance of collective action in maintaining cleanliness during the programme. He encouraged all to contribute towards ensuring the well-being of society and the environment. Upreti also spoke of the foundation’s goal to establish 300 plastic banks in Dehradun, engaging about 100,000 students and community members in managing plastic waste in the near future.
