The Forest department’s patrol team discovered the body of an elephant in the Bijrani range of Corbett Tiger Reserve on Sunday. Reaching the site in the Malani beat of the range on being informed, the Corbett director Saket Badola inspected the body of the pachyderm and stated that the male elephant was aged about 20 years. Both the tusks of the elephant were found to be secure. Observations revealed tiger pug marks near the carcass of the elephant and marks of the big cat’s claws and teeth on the pachyderm’s back. Considering this, it is being surmised that the tiger chased the elephant and exhausted it. This may have been a major reason for the jumbo’s death, according to officials. The authorities conducted a post mortem examination of the elephant and sent viscera samples to Indian Veterinary Research Institute in Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh. A camera trap was also set up at the place where the elephant’s body was discovered. The Corbett deputy director Rahul Mishra, veterinary officers Dr Dushyant Sharma, Dr Rajiv Kumar, warden Amit Gwaskoti and other departmental staff members were also present at the site.
