Dehradun district administration acts against littering in woods

The Dehradun district administration took action to clear garbage dumped from forest areas in various suburbs of the provisional State capital. The action came after The Pioneer reported on the illegal dumping of garbage in forested areas in the city, particularly near roads and urban areas. Several people can be seen dumping everything from household to commercial waste in the woods.
Considering this, the Dehradun district magistrate Savin Bansal directed the Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) on Thursday to ensure cleanliness of the stretch of the forest in the Ladpur area of Raipur Road every two days. The cleanup work also began on Thursday.
Speaking to The Pioneer, Bansal stated that he has also directed the MCD to implement preventive measures to curb similar activities in other parts of the city. The Dehradun municipal commissioner Namami Bansal elaborated on the corporation’s strategy to tackle the problem stating that the forest stretch in Ladpur is one of 71 garbage vulnerable points identified by the MCD. The corporation is committed to ensuring that no waste is dumped in this area. She acknowledged the growing issue of illegal garbage dumping in Dehradun and said that this has prompted the MCD to devise a comprehensive plan to address it. “We are working on increasing door-to-door garbage collection in the nearby areas of the vulnerable points to prevent residents from discarding waste outside.
Besides this, the corporation plans to plant greenery and install tree guards to discourage dumping in these areas,” she said. She informed that the MCD’s approach will be tailored to the specific needs of each area, considering factors such as the surface and terrain. The initiative is set to begin in February with the goal of maintaining cleanliness at these vulnerable garbage hotspots and promoting better waste management practices throughout Dehradun, she added.
