Police claim 30 per cent drop in road accidents in Dehradun compared to 2024

Dehradun has recorded a 30 per cent decrease in road accidents in the first two months of 2025 compared to the same period in 2024. A total of 91 road accidents were reported in the initial two months of 2024 while only 65 were recorded in 2025, the senior superintendent of police Ajai Singh claimed. The SSP attributed the decline to stricter enforcement against traffic violations and public alcohol consumption.

He stated that actions against drunk driving have increased fourfold this year. Similarly, cases against dangerous driving, rash driving, stunt driving, overspeeding and wrong side driving have risen three times compared to the previous year.

Singh said, “The police have been taking continuous action against individuals consuming alcohol in public places. Over the past six months, more than 6,000 people found drinking in open spaces or inside vehicles have faced legal action. In the first two months of 2024, police took action against 811 drivers for violations related to rash driving, overspeeding and wrong side driving, leading to the seizure of 272 vehicles. In the same period in 2025, action was taken against 2,430 drivers and 1,014 vehicles were seized.” He said that in 2024, 182 individuals were arrested for drunk driving and their vehicles were seized. In 2025, the number rose to 852 within just two months, the SSP said.

According to the SSP, the reduction in road accidents is also a result of strict action against public drinking. In the last six months, 6,127 individuals consuming alcohol in public spaces were detained, many of whom were found drinking in their vehicles by the roadside. The police’s crackdown on public drinking has contributed to a decrease in accidents by preventing intoxicated individuals from driving, he said.
