Surgeries drop by 30 % in district hospital due to lack of surgeon

PIONEER EDGE NEWS SERVICE/Dehradun

The Deen Dayal Upadhyay District Hospital has experienced a 30 per cent drop in surgeries over the past two months due to a surgeon’s unavoidable absence. The hospital’s Principal Medical Superintendent (PMS) Dr Manu Jain stated that the hospital currently has three positions for surgeons. Of these, one is filled by a permanent surgeon, another is occupied by a surgeon on attachment, while the third position remains vacant. He said that the permanent surgeon has been either absent or on leave for a few days due to varied issues, which has significantly impacted the hospital’s surgical operations for the past two months.

He stated that the absence of the primary surgeon has forced the other surgeon to manage all surgical cases, which has proven to be challenging. As a result, over the past two months, the number of surgeries performed at the hospital has decreased by 30 per cent. Typically, about 150 surgeries are conducted in a month, but during this period, only 100 surgeries were performed. He also said that the issue has now been resolved, as the absent surgeon, Dr Rajeev Tamta, has recently resumed service at the hospital and it is anticipated that the number of surgeries will soon return to normal levels.

In reference to the vacant position for a surgeon at the hospital, Jain said that the authorities had transferred a surgeon from Pithoragarh to the district hospital in July. However, the surgeon has not yet assumed the role at the district hospital. He stated that if the situation does not change, the hospital administration will be compelled to ask or submit a proposal to the Director General of Health to recruit a new surgeon for the vacant position.
