District hospital sets up separate oxygen supply unit for OT & ICU

PIONEER EDGE NEWS SERVICE/Dehradun

In an effort to improve services at the Deen Dayal Upadhyay District Hospital, a separate oxygen supply unit for the operating theatre (OT) and intensive care unit (ICU) has recently been established and commenced operating at the hospital, the principal medical superintendent of the hospital Dr Manu Jain said.

The separation of the oxygen supply unit followed the inconvenience caused by the previous arrangements. Commenting on the system which led to the change, Jain said that the oxygen supply unit has been set up in the basement of the new hospital building, allowing it to distribute oxygen throughout all floors. However, it had been noted that the oxygen supply diminishes by the time it reaches the fourth floor, where the OT and ICU are located.

For this facility, a high-pressure oxygen supply is essential. However, due to the layout of the basement, it doesn’t function as effectively as it should. Further, the ward boy often needs to navigate multiple floors to access the basement and deliver oxygen to the fourth floor, which causes unnecessary delays. This situation presents several related challenges, he said.

He said that these issues had been previously brought to the attention of the hospital administration by the doctors. In order to address these concerns and improve patient services, they submitted a proposal for a separate oxygen unit for OT and ICU to the district magistrate. In response, the hospital administration identified space on the fourth floor for this new unit. After reviewing the proposal, the district magistrate approved it and allocated a budget ranging from Rs 1.5 lakh for its implementation, he stated. He further shared that a separate oxygen supply unit has recently been set up and commenced operating on the fourth floor for the OT and the ICU. He stated that the establishment of this separate unit will ensure a continuous supply of oxygen for patients, significantly reducing the risk to their lives. Additionally, he said that this setup will minimise the wastage of oxygen. Earlier, when oxygen was needed only in the operating theatre and ICU, it was supplied from the basement. This process caused unnecessary waste as it was used on lower floors, Jain added.
