Rudrapur, Pithoragarh medical colleges to start this year: Rawat

The Health minister Dhan Singh Rawat has said that the government medical colleges in Rudrapur and Pithoragarh will start functioning from the academic session 2026-27. He said that the State administration has sent a proposal to the National Medical Commission (NMC) for approving 100 MBBS seats in these medical colleges.
In another decision which will pave the way for establishment of government medical colleges in Rudrapur and Pithoragarh, the State administration has started the process of transfer of district hospitals and district women hospitals of Rudrapur and Pithoragarh to the Medical Education department. On the directive of the chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, the secretary Sachin Kurve issued orders for transfer of JL Nehru district hospital Rudrapur to the Medical Education department for operation of Pandit Ramsumer Shukla, Government Medical College, Rudrapur. Similarly orders for transfer of BD Pandey district hospital and district Women hospital, Pithoragarh to the Medical Education department for operation of Government Medical College, Pithoragarh were also given by Kurve. These hospitals were under the control of the Medical Health and Family Welfare department and after transfer to Medical Education department there operation will come under the Principal of the Medical College concerned and the director of Medical Education department.
The department will also operate these hospitals as per the norms of the National Medical Commission (NMC). At present there are five government medical colleges (Haldwani, Dehradun, Srinagar, Almora, and Haridwar) in Uttarakhand. The State government has set a target to start new medical colleges in Rudrapur and Pithoragarh this year.
