PIONEER EDGE NEWS SERVICE/Dehradun

In response to a recent viral video featuring a young woman who expressed her distress regarding the treatment she received at Deen Dayal Upadhyay District Hospital, the hospital administration has established a three-member committee to investigate the matter. In the video, the woman described being struck by a car, which led her to visit the hospital. However, she expressed dissatisfaction with the facilities at the district hospital stating that the wheelchair provided to her was old. She claimed that both she and her attendant were forced to navigate between two buildings at the hospital to obtain a prescription, bill and X-ray. She voiced her concerns about not receiving immediate treatment at the district hospital.

This incident has sparked concerns and raised questions about the quality of service provided to patients by the district hospital administration. Commenting on this, the hospital’s principal medical superintendent Dr Manu Jain said upon learning about the incident, he immediately took cognisance of the matter and formed a three-member committee that includes an emergency officer and other officials to investigate the matter. He also personally looked into some facts related to the video.

Jain informed that on the day the young woman visited the hospital, five prisoners also visited the hospital and were receiving treatment in the emergency department, due to which the doctors at the designated location were busy attending to them. He said that the young woman did not visit the doctor in the emergency department; instead, someone advised her to see an orthopaedic surgeon. After consulting the orthopaedic surgeon, she was instructed to get an X-ray. He clarified that the case was not life-threatening and assured that immediate treatment is provided in such situations. Regarding the wheelchair issue, Jain said that the wheelchair was functioning properly but the young woman had inadvertently locked it, which prevented it from moving. He stated that the hospital administration is awaiting the committee’s report for a final conclusion on this matter.

Jain further emphasised that measures have been taken to prevent similar issues in the future. He directed that PRD personnel at the hospital must assist patients if they are alone without attendants. Additionally, from now on, pregnant women, senior citizens and other vulnerable individuals will be given priority in hospital services. An extra doctor will be deployed to the emergency wing. Nursing staff and ward boys have been instructed to step forward to assist patients if doctors are occupied, he added.
