Dehradun has been selected among 12 cities across the country under a Government of India initiative to develop heat-resilient urban models in collaboration with the National Institute of Urban Affairs (NIUA). The initiative aims to reduce the impact of rising temperatures and climate change, while making the city safer and more environment-friendly.

Dehradun municipal commissioner Namami Bansal said that the initiative is an important step for the city which will help to strengthen Dehradun’s preparedness to deal with climate-related challenges while supporting its development as a clean and sustainable urban centre. Bansal said that the project will focus on developing green spaces, promoting water conservation and creating shaded, eco-friendly facilities at public places. Heat-resilient infrastructure is planned at key locations, including parks, roadside areas and other public spaces across the city. The plan also includes the expansion of green belts and plantation drives to help control urban temperatures. She said that improving tree cover and open green areas will be a key part of the effort.

As part of the initiative, public spaces are proposed to be developed where residents can get relief during extreme heat conditions. These may include shaded areas and facilities designed to reduce heat exposure, especially during peak summer months.

Bansal added that the project will incorporate modern and sustainable solutions aimed at long-term environmental protection and urban resilience.
