In a significant achievement, seven research publications of the Nuclear Research Laboratory of the department of Physics,  HNB Garhwal Central University have been referenced and included in the prestigious global report ‘Sources, Effects and Risks of Ionizing Radiation’ for the year 2024 published by the United Nations Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation (UNSCEAR), a scientific body of the United Nations.

The head of department of Physics of the university, RC Ramola said that the achievement is not only a testimony to the high level research capability of the University but also underlines the growing global reputation of the Indian scientific community in the field of environmental radiation, radioactivity and public health.

Ramola, who is credited with the achievement, informed that the NRL at HNB Garhwal Central University has been conducting ongoing research in the field of environmental radioactivity and radiology for nearly 30 years. Extensive research has been conducted here, particularly on radon, natural radiation levels, radiation risk assessment and public health impacts.

Pertinently, UNSCEAR is one of the world’s leading scientific committees within the United Nations system, charged with the scientific assessment of the effects of ionizing radiation on human health, ecology and the environment.

The organization’s reports are used by governments, nuclear regulatory bodies, health agencies, and policymakers around the world to develop radiation safety standards, nuclear security policies and public health guidelines. Therefore, the inclusion of research from an Indian university in this report is considered a highly prestigious and rare achievement.
