The 1976 batch of the Indian Military Academy (IMA) celebrated its Golden Jubilee in Dehradun on Saturday, marking 50 years since the officers were commissioned into the Indian Army. Former officers of Course 58 Regular and 41 Technical gathered to remember their journey, achievements and contribution to the nation.
According to the batch representatives, the course began in January 1975 and the cadets were commissioned in June 1976. A total of 363 cadets were part of the batch, including regular, technical and foreign cadets from Nepal, Bhutan and Ghana. Over the years, many officers from the batch rose to senior ranks in the Army, including lieutenant generals, major generals and brigadiers.
Speaking on the Agniveer scheme, lieutenant general (retd) Arun Sahni said that the scheme will continue to improve in the coming years as the government is actively working on it. He added that the younger generation is more capable and adaptable than previous generations and has the potential to contribute significantly to the armed forces.
Colonel (retd) VK Biala said that serving the nation was the most rewarding part of his life. Reflecting on his time at the IMA, he said that while the academy’s infrastructure, technology and training methods have changed over the years, the core values of service to the nation, discipline and dedication remain unchanged. He emphasised that these values continue to guide every officer throughout their career. During the event, they also paid tribute to their 72 coursemates who had passed away.
