The Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) has undertaken a major reshuffle of sanitation officials across all 100 wards as part of efforts to make the city’s sanitation system more effective, accountable and result-oriented. The decision was taken during a review meeting chaired by Dehradun municipal commissioner Alok Kumar Pandey on Monday. Pandey expressed strong dissatisfaction over garbage visible on major roads, poor waste collection and negligence in sanitation work. He directed officials to issue notices and seek explanations from private agencies and companies found failing to perform according to contractual obligations.
As part of the restructuring, the responsibilities and work areas of all chief sanitation inspectors (CSIs) and sanitation inspectors have been revised. The officials have been instructed to ensure cleanliness in their assigned wards, resolve online and offline complaints, monitor door-to-door waste collection, road sweeping, drain cleaning, IEC activities, waste disposal and the work of contracted agencies. The corporation has also carried out a major redistribution of duties among employees and head assistants at the MCD headquarters.
The commissioner also expressed dissatisfaction over the cleanliness of major roads and instructed officials to ensure that no garbage is visible on roads, dividers, footpaths or public places. He directed all chief sanitation inspectors to conduct daily inspections and personally monitor sanitation arrangements in their respective areas. Special directions were issued to evening sanitation teams to undertake focused cleaning drives in markets, commercial areas and major roads, while night-time sanitation operations have also been ordered to be strengthened.
The performance of private sanitation agencies and contractors also came under scrutiny during the review. Pandey directed officials to identify companies not meeting contractual conditions, obtain explanations from them and issue notices wherever required. He reiterated that cleanliness remains one of the corporation’s highest priorities and that no laxity in sanitation work will be tolerated. According to officials, accountability has now been fixed and all employees and officers are expected to deliver visible results on the ground.
