PIONEER EDGE NEWS SERVICE/Dehradun

To prevent road accidents during the monsoon season and ensure passenger safety, the Transport department conducted a special night checking drive on various sensitive and busy routes across Dehradun district. This initiative resulted in 105 challans being issued and the seizure of 15 vehicles.

The drive was led by the regional transport officer (Enforcement and Road Safety) Anita Chamola. The departmental team stopped vehicles at various checkpoints, inspecting their technical and safety aspects. Drivers were also educated about safe driving in the monsoon season, vehicle technical fitness and adherence to traffic rules.

According to officials, four special enforcement teams were formed by the Dehradun division RTO, who coordinated and conducted intensive checks throughout the night at various locations. Special vigilance was maintained on major and accident-prone routes in the district with inspections carried out at Haridwar Bypass Road, Kargi Chowk, ISBT, Turner Road and other sites. Various categories of commercial and private vehicles were checked to ensure compliance with road safety standards. Officials said that considering the possibility of road accidents during the monsoon, specific points were inspected in the vehicles including working status of wipers, flashlights and indicators, improper use of headlights and high beams, brake systems and tyre conditions, among others. Vehicles found with non-functional wipers, missing essential safety equipment, or operating with improper high-beam usage were fined under the Motor Vehicles Act. Vehicles with serious irregularities were also seized.  The Transport department has urged all vehicle owners and drivers to have their vehicles technically checked during the monsoon season, adhere strictly to traffic rules, avoid unnecessary high beam usage, carry all necessary documents and prioritise safe and responsible driving. Officials said that special night and emergency enforcement campaigns will be conducted in the coming days to further strengthen road safety.
