Retaining wall collapses after rain, many houses damaged

PIONEER EDGE NEWS SERVICE /Dehradun

Rainfall caused a retaining wall to collapse in the Nai Basti area of Vijay Colony in Pathariya Peer, Dehradun on Saturday night. The incident happened at around 9:30 PM and damaged four to five houses located below the wall. Soon after the accident, there were reports that a woman had been trapped under the debris.

After receiving the information, Dehradun district magistrate Ashish Chauhan reached the spot late at night to monitor the rescue and relief work. Teams from the Nagar Kotwali police, the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and other emergency services also reached the area and started a search operation.

During the incident, 62-year-old Vimla Devi, a resident of Nai Basti, suffered minor injuries. She was taken to the hospital in a 108 ambulance. Doctors treated her and later said that her condition was stable. Officials confirmed that no one was killed in the incident. As a safety measure, the district administration evacuated all houses located near the collapsed retaining wall and shifted residents to safer places.

People have not been allowed to stay in the affected area until it is declared safe, officials of the district administration said. The DM directed the departments concerned to closely monitor the site and carry out a technical inspection of the damaged retaining wall. He also instructed officials to take all necessary safety measures to prevent any further accidents. Police, SDRF and other departments remain deployed at the site, while the administration continues to monitor the situation because rainfall is still affecting many parts of Dehradun.
