MCD identifies 100 bulk waste generators, issues notices to six

PIONEER EDGE NEWS SERVICE/Dehradun
The Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) on Monday identified around 100 bulk waste generators (BWGs) across the city as part of its efforts to improve waste segregation and ensure that large waste-generating establishments manage their waste at source.
According to officials, notices have so far been issued to six of the identified BWGs, while registration of some other establishments has already been completed.
The BWGs that have received notices have been directed to register themselves on the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) portal and follow the prescribed waste management norms.
The civic body is also planning to organise registration camps at different locations in the city to help BWGs complete the process. Representatives of the identified establishments will be invited to these camps, where officials will explain the registration process, compliance requirements and other formalities.
Officials informed that MCD will also provide training and guidance to BWGs on managing waste generated at their premises. This will include information on segregation of wet and dry waste, recycling and the operation of waste-processing systems.
The civic body plans to encourage establishments to process their wet waste on site and ensure that recyclable dry waste is properly handled instead of being mixed with other waste.
The move comes as the MCD seeks to reduce the amount of waste reaching its collection and disposal system. Large establishments such as hotels, restaurants, institutions, hospitals and other commercial units can generate significant quantities of waste every day.
The corporation would continue identifying BWGs to bring them under the prescribed waste management system. The initiative is aimed at making bulk waste generators more responsible for the waste they produce while reducing the pressure on the civic body’s collection and disposal infrastructure, officials added.
