Chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on Monday said that work is progressing rapidly to implement the Sports Legacy Plan in Uttarakhand, under which 23 sports academies would be set up in eight major cities to provide athletes with high-level training facilities. He declared this while addressing the inaugural ceremony of the Asian Open Short Track Speed Skating Trophy 2026 at Maharana Pratap Sports Complex, Dehradun. The  competition began on August 17 and will conclude on August 20.

Welcoming the players, coaches and officials who came from India and abroad, the CM said that it was a matter of pride for the State to host a prestigious international event like the Asian Open Short Track Speed Skating Trophy.   “The tournament will further strengthen Uttarakhand’s identity as a favourable destination for winter and ice sports at the global level,” he said.

Laying stress on sportsmanship, he said that discipline, dedication and an unwavering spirit were more important than mere   victory and defeat.  He added that such events will inspire the State’s youth to take up sports and give a boost to sports tourism in Uttarakhand.

Highlighting the government’s efforts, the CM said that Uttarakhand is working continuously to emerge as a leading sports State. “The successful hosting of the 38th National Games last year laid the foundation for modern, world-class sports infrastructure, making the State capable of hosting international competitions,” he asserted.

Dhami also mentioned the State’s first sports university coming up in Haldwani. “Besides, a women’s sports college has already started functioning in Lohaghat,” he informed.

“Under the new State sports policy, athletes winning medals at national and international levels are being given opportunities in government service. Talented sports persons are provided sports scholarships and free education and training at residential sports colleges. Athletes are also being supported through initiatives like the Chief Minister’s Sports Development Fund and many others,” CM said.

He added that along with traditional sports, the government is also promoting water sports, adventure sports, winter sports and ice sports.

“Our endeavour is to develop Uttarakhand as a preferred sports training hub not only for athletes from across the country but also from around the world,” Dhami said.
