Amid the publication of the final electoral roll of Uttarakhand after end of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) in the State and ongoing nationwide agitation of opposition parties against the Election Commission of India, the partners of the INDI Alliance in Uttarakhand have decided to intensify the agitation against the ECI in Uttarakhand.

The leaders of the alliance held a meeting here on Saturday and held elaborate discussion on what they allege irregularities, rigging and influencing the democratic process in the SIR process.

The leaders discussed arbitrary addition or deletion of names in the voter lists, unnecessary harassment of common voters and serious questions arising regarding the transparency and fairness of the election process.

The Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) president, Ganesh Godiyal said that the impartiality of the Election Commission is of paramount importance in a democracy. ” If transparency is being questioned in the process of revising voter lists, it is a matter of concern for the entire democratic structure,’’ he said. The PCC president said that the Congress party and the INDI Alliance will not allow the rights of eligible voters to be tampered with at any cost. He said that in Uttarakhand, all the allies of the INDI Alliance will coordinate with each other and bring the alleged irregularities in the SIR to the public’s attention and will launch a phased movement to protect democracy, the constitution and the right to vote.

In the meeting, the leaders resolved that the campaign of “Save Voters-Save Democracy” will be taken to the booth level in the State.  The leaders also demanded immediate resignation of chief election commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

The meeting was attended by Indresh Maikhuri, Atul Sati, Atul Sharma, Rajendra Negi, Shankar Gopal among others.
