The presence of tigers from the Terai region to the Himalayan region in Uttarakhand is a result of the active involvement of the state’s people in tiger conservation. Stating this at a programme held on International Tiger Day at the CM camp office, chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said that steps taken in other states need to be studied in order to mitigate human-wildlife conflict in Uttarakhand. He said that the rise in the state’s tiger population from 178 in 2006 to 442 in 2018 also shows the involvement of the people in tiger conservation. Dhami also released a photograph of the male tiger reintroduced to Rajaji tiger reserve from the Corbett tiger reserve.
Forest and Wildlife minister Harak Singh Rawat said that the tiger reserve in the Terai-Bhabar area of Uttarakhand has the highest tiger density in the country. Apart from the Terai-Bhabar region, tiger presence had been confirmed by camera trap in the high Himalayan regions of Kedarnath and Askot wildlife sanctuaries which shows the expansion of the tiger habitat. He said that tiger safari at Pakhro will also boost the state’s economy.
Additional chief secretary Anand Bardhan and forest department officials were also present on the occasion.
