Complex surgery performed on liver TB patient in Doon

The doctors at Max hospital here have claimed to have performed hepatectomy (surgery to remove part of the liver) to save the life of a 36-year-old patient suffering from a rare medical condition.
The team of doctors led by Dr Mayank Nautiyal of the hospital, performed the procedure to remove the left portion of the liver to treat the patient who had been experiencing severe pain in her abdomen for the last three months.
The Head of Department Liver Transplant and Biliary sciences, Gastrointestinal Surgery, Dr Nautiyal said that a complicated cystic-solid tumour was detected in the left lobe of liver of the patient. “The surgery was successfully conducted and she was discharged on the fourth day after surgery. Patient is doing fine,’’ he said.
The Consultant, Liver Transplant and Biliary Sciences, Dr Karamjot Singh Bedi said, “The visceral tuberculosis is extremely rare and is usually secondary that spreads through the bloodstream from another source of infection or through seeding during any surgery. As a result, primary tuberculosis of the liver is an exceptionally unusual diagnosis, with just a few cases reported worldwide.” The Vice President Operations and Unit Head of the hospital, Dr Sandeep Singh Tanwar said that liver disease is the tenth cause of death in India and recently, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease is on the rise in the country.
